2011 Rehoboth Show Update

My wife and I came to the conclusion that every outdoor art show is like a roller coaster. You get hot, then chilly, you're excited, nervous, bored, excited again... it goes on and on like this for hours. It's no wonder the shows are so exhausting physically, yet so fun to participate.

We will have more paintings next weekend so if you've already seen us at the show, don't worry, you will have new paintings to enjoy.  We hope to see you again next weekend.

I want to thank everybody that came out this weekend, and a special thanks to the purchasers of my art. I hope you enjoy it for many years.

I had a lot of people ask me about my painting technique yesterday at the Lititz Art Show. I've written about the process before, but I thought I'd share it with you again, with this most recent painting depicting a hotel in Rehoboth Beach, DE.  I follow the two steps depicted in the pictures each time I paint, even though there is no magical formula.

I let the orange wash dry before I start sketching in charcoal.  I find it best to keep my drawing loose at this stage.

After I sketch it out, I do a quick underpainting using a mix of burnt sienna, Prussian blue & turpentine that I mix to a watercolor-like consistency. This allows me to really map out the shadows before I start and provides a solid framework for the painting.

Boardwalk Lights

I've been getting myself prepared for the show this Saturday. Last year I setup my tent for my first outdoor art show in Lititz, PA and I'm looking forward to returning. Between the swans, the scent of chocolate in the air and small town charm it's no wonder that Litiz is known as Lancaster County's Sweet Spot.

Tent Location: B165

Show Date: Saturday, July 30, 2011 (rain or shine)

Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Admission: Free

Parking: There are parking lots in the park for visitors as well as street parking on Broad Street.

"I would never want to live anywhere but Baltimore. You can look far and wide, but you'll never discover a stranger city with such extreme style. It's as if every eccentric in the South decided to move north, ran out of gas in Baltimore, and decided to stay." -John Waters

I dropped off my painting for the 73rd Members' Show at the Rehoboth Art League yesterday. The exhibition opens on Friday, July 22 @ 5 and runs until August 26th. It was a good show last year and if you're in the area (because the boardwalk IS awesome) the art league should be one of your stops.

Inner Harbor
